Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Is your child in Year 9 to 12 curious about their career choices? Now they can use LifeLauncher, a free online tool to explore and simplify their career choices.

Your child can explore courses and careers in-depth, at their own pace, anytime, anywhere and on any device. The tool includes 4,000 careers and 1,500 course options, all in one place.

How does it work?

Joshua Lee a Student of Kadina High Campus in Lismore, has just returned from competing as a member of the Australian Team at the 2019 ICF Wildwater Canoeing Juniors & U23 World Championships held in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In the Teams event, Josh teamed up with two other Australian paddlers, obtaining 9th position, beating the very experienced Slovakian, Great Britain and USA teams.

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

Lismore’s Sister City Student Exchange Program with Yamato Takada, Japan, has been occurring since 1985 and for the past four years Lismore City Council has been coordinating the program.

We are again looking for students to be a part of this year’s Student Exchange program, along with families to host the Japanese Students that will be in Lismore in July this year. The program is aimed at students 15years and up who can take on the responsibility of being an ambassador for their school as well as Lismore.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Do you have a great idea to improve your area?

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

We do not publish a list for Year 8 - 12 as individual teachers have their own requirements. Students in these years will be told what the subject requirements are in week one.

Remember Year 7, 11 and 12 commence at 9 am on Tuesday Jan 30th. Years 8, 9 and 10 commence Wednesday Jan 31st.

Dear Parents and Carers of Yr 10 students

For those people that paid you have two options:

1. Get your child to collect a refund form from the front office and complete the form. Under the new Department of Education fiance procedures funds are transferred electronically within 30 days of receipt of the form. Cheques are no longer issued.

2. Leave the credit against your students name for next year's fees.

Senior uniforms for 2018 are now available from the canteen. Your child can see Cheryl in the canteen to organize a time to discuss sizes and for fitting. It is preferred that uniforms are purchased this year in anticipation of a busy beginning to 2018.

Kadina High students from year 10 will be involved in Shared Curriculum Orientation visits on Monday 23rd October and Wednesday 25th October.

Students who will be studying a shared curriculum subject at another Campus will visit their host campus on the following days and times below. Students will meet with, and discuss their chosen subject with an experienced teacher:

Monday 23rd October, Kadina High Students depart KHC bus bay at 9.20 for a half day visit at Richmond River High Campus. Students return at approximately 12.15pm. Students will travel with Ms Perry.

Wednesday 25th October, Kadina High Students depart KHC bus bay at 11.20am for a half day visit at Lismore High Campus. Students return at approximately 2.30pm. Students will travel with Mrs O'Sullivan.

If your child/ ward who is studying a Shared Curriculum subject has not yet picked up:

-a Shared Curriculum student booklet,

- a permission note to attend these visits, they need to do so immediately.

Good news story for one of our staff members

IT'S the Gumtree exchange that saved a life. When 67-year-old Lib Ruytenberg had a cardiac arrest at her Lismore home, the only thing standing between her and death was a stranger collecting a free wine rack she had advertised on the classifieds website. And that stranger just happened to have been waiting 15 years for that moment "It was instantaneous," Cabarita Beach SLSC patrol captain Elke Readman said of her response when the woman she had met minutes earlier collapsed as they carried part of the wine rack to her car.

Combined Parent Teacher Interview Night on 27th June at Lismore High Campus

Parent/Teacher interviews for all Year 11 and 12 will be held at the Lismore High Campus, Dalley St from 3:30pm to 6:30pm on Tuesday 27th June 2017. Bookings must be finalised by 2:00pm that day, when bookings for this event will close.

For parents that do not have internet access, appointments may be booked through the Front Office of the Kadina High Campus or by using a computer in the campus library, from Wednesday 14th June onwards. Students with written permission from parents may also book appointments this way. Alternatively, parents may phone their student's home campus to arrange interview times. Interviews are strictly 8 minutes and spaces are limited. If you require more time, please contact your teacher directly to make alternative arrangements.

Kadina High Campus will not be hosting Shared Curriculum lessons on Thursday 27th April due to their annual Cross Country carnival going ahead. Richmond River and Lismore High Shared Curriculum classes will go ahead on Thursday 27th April.

All Kadina High students are expected to attend their annual Cross Country carnival.

Richmond River High and Lismore High Campuses will host their annual Cross Country Carnival on Friday 5th May. There will be no Rivers Shared Curriculum classes hosted on this day for all students across the College; including Kadina High Campus.

Shared curriculum subjects recommence on Tuesday 4th April 2017. The bus will run between Lismore High Campus and Kadina High Campus on Tuesday 4th April and Friday 7th April 2017. The bus will not run at Kadina High Campus on Thursday 6th April due to Kadina High Campus being involved in Cross Country (weather permitting). Therefore no shared curriculum at Kadina High campus on Thursday.

Year 12 Half Yearly exams have been rescheduled for the end of week 1 and beginning of week 2 term 2. A new timetable will be available within the next 48 hours.

TVET classes at Lismore / Wollongbar / Casino campuses will NOT operate this week.

Congratulations to Mr. Greg Smith, Principal of Banora Point High School who was successful, through an Expression Of Interest process in gaining the relieving Executive Principal, The Rivers Secondary College position to replace Mr. John Baker.

Mr. Smith brings a depth of experience to the role, particularly in his current role as principal and through his leadership responsibilities of the T5 (Tweed 5) learning community.

Mr. Smith will commence in the position in coming days and will relieve for the continuation of 2016.

‘Rivers MADness' 2016

The Rivers Secondary College is proud to announce ‘Rivers MADness' 2016 – a spectacular evening of Music, Art and Drama, set to showcase the brilliant talents of our HSC Creative and Performing Arts students.

Lismore Campus, Kadina Campus and Richmond River Campus will join forces on Wednesday the 24^th of August for the annual Rivers Secondary College event. The evening will commence at Lismore City Hall, with the Art Exhibition opening from 5:00pm until 6:15pm. Guests will be greeted with complementary canapés and beverages to accompany their visual experience. At 6:15pm, guests are to be seated for a 6:30pm official opening by the Lord Mayor Jenny Dowell. Following this, is the commencement of our outstanding Music and Drama performances. The evening is expected to conclude at 8:00pm.

‘Rivers MADness' is set to be an incredible representation of our public school community's most talented, at their creative best. The culmination of our students continued dedication and love of the arts is on show for one night only, so come and share in their special talents and be inspired by their passion…We look forward to seeing you there.

Some Kadina High Campus students and community members suffer severe allergies to aerosol sprays or perfumes that can act as a trigger to an (often) serious asthma attack, or bring on a severe migraine in a sensitive individual. The allergy can be sufficiently serious to put a student into anaphylactic shock if an aerosol can has been used anywhere in the student's vicinity. This can be a life threatening situation, resulting in the student being transported to hospital in an ambulance.

•Students are encouraged to follow correct hygiene procedures by applying deodorant at home after showering: a good deodorant will last all day if applied to clean skin before dressing

•Roll-on and stick deodorants are permitted at school

Let's help to create an asthma friendly school. This means that everyone needs to be aware of their own right to a safe learning environment and for the responsibility for the health and safety of others in their shared spaces.

NAPLAN 2016

NAPLAN is an annual assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It tests the types of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. The tests cover skills in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy. The assessments are undertaken every year in the second full week in May. The results are used to allow schools to identify on teaching areas that may need development and plan accordingly.

Students cannot pass or fail NAPLAN.

All students are expected to participate.

Exemptions are only applicable for students with English language proficiency or significant intellectual disabilities, neither of which apply to students at Kadina High. Parents wishing to exempt their child will need to complete an exemption application form available from Mrs Stanton in the English Faculty.

During the NAPLAN tests students are not to be in possession of any electronic devices such as mobile phones, iPods, bluetooth devices etc. Students in Year 7 and in Year 9 will bring home a "letter to parents" outlining the NAPLAN timetable, however you can download the letter here.

Welcome back to 2016
The staff of The Rivers Secondary College would like to sincerely welcome all students and their families back to another year of learning and growth.
The three campuses of the College have been planning and implementing many aspects of their operations aimed at enhancing the learning and teaching processes for another successful year. Our shared curriculum for stage 6, Years 11 and 12, has now grown to support more than 130 students travelling across the college to pursue their preferred subject choices.
There are plans for the staff across the College to undertake significant collaborative professional learning. The entry of combined campus sporting teams will commence soon, as well as planning for joint cross college performances.
We are particularly welcoming of our newly enrolled students into Year 7, as well as those new to our College. There will be upcoming opportunities to meet the campus staff at a variety of functions which will be advertised from each campus.
The entire staff wish each and every one of our students a year of success and achievement through accepting the opportunities that are available especially as we make enhancements across learning and teaching areas as a result of our work in what we call our Personalised Learning Project.

Dear Parents and Caregivers

We have received advice from the SES about the developing tropical low system.

The severe weather warning for heavy rain may lead to flash flooding and strong winds may cause storm damage.

While it is difficult to predict exactly how this weather event will affect us there is a likelihood that buses may not be able to run and school operations will be impacted.

A number of staff and students may not be able to attend the school due to flooding. Consequently I am advising that Kadina High School will be operating on an adjusted schedule tomorrow.

We predict that regular classes will be affected by this weather event.

No Rivers cross campus classes will run, and we have postponed the school photographs.

On days when the school is inaccessible due to natural occurrences such as a severe weather event a justified absence from school will be recorded.

I want to thank all parents and caregivers for their understanding and support.

School uniform update.

Kadina High School P&C have negotiated a deal with a new uniform provider. In planning for 2015 we are asking all year 10 and 11 female students to visit the school canteen before the school holidays to discuss blouse sizes to ensure correct orders are in for the new-year.

The new provider will also be providing a new tartan style skirt for female students 7 -12.

In 2015

- junior boys (7-10) can purchase the school polo top for $25, black Kadina shorts for $20 and Kadina long pants for $30.

-junior girls (7-10) can purchase the school polo top for $25, the new skirt for $30, black Kadina shorts for $20 and Kadina long pants for $30.

-senior boys (11-12) can purchase the school shirt for $25, black Kadina shorts for $20, and Kadina long pants for $30.

-senior girls (11-12) can purchase the school blouse for $30, the new skirt for $30, black Kadina shorts for $20 and Kadina long pants for $30

Please note from the beginning of 2015 the plain green skirt will no longer be a part of the Kadina High School uniform.

All uniform items should be purchased through the school canteen. The uniform is supported by the whole school community including the Student Representative Council, staff and P&C.

We anticipate photographs of the new style of tops and skirts will be added to the school website and Facebook page in the coming days.

The great news is we anticipate this supplier will keep up with the demand of stock and minimal prices long term and students are already excited about the samples seen.

UNIFORM UPDATE

The school canteen will be open Tuesday January 27th from 9am - 2pm to purchase school uniforms. Please do not purchase green skirts from downtown as the school has a new skirt which will be available on the 27th. The green skirt purchased downtown is not a part of our uniform.

The school does not sell shoes. A full enclosed shoe is a Dept of Education requirement, preferably black leather.

From one of our parents talking about her son Jake, an ex-Kadina High School

I would like to let you know about Jake's achievements now that he has completed his three year Bachelor of Science degree through ADFA (The Australian Defence Force Academy)
During his final semester he achieved a High Distinction for his Leadership program which he developed and that involved Third Year Cadets mentoring First Year Cadets.
In his other three subjects he gained distinctions.
This has allowed him to graduate as a "distinguished cadet" from ADFA.

Yesterday, Jake was awarded the Third Year Cadet Military Training Award along with the Third Year Cadet Army Training Award.

Today, at his final passing out parade he was awarded the Australia Defence Force Academy Leadership Award - one of only 5 awards presented today to the graduating cadets.
This included the presentation of a ceremonial military sword by His
Excellency, the Governor General, Peter Cosgrove.

Jake will now have a well-earned break here at home with us before commencing the final stage of his training in mid-January at the RMC Duntroon.

On behalf of my husband and I, we would like to acknowledge the contribution that Kadina High School played in getting Jake to this point in his life.
No matter who Jake came in contact with at Kadina during his years there, you have all had a part in helping shape him into the amazing young man he is today.
Mark and I have always believed, and lived by the adage, that it takes a village to raise a child and how very, very lucky we have been to have had Kadina as part of the village that helped us raise, not only Jake but Matt and Kait as well.
From the dedicated, focused teaching staff to the support staff and
ancillary staff, your dedication and devotion to the education of our
children has helped us to raise them to be decent, honest, hardworking, loyal functioning members of society.
It is heart-warming to hear all of our children speak so fondly, and often of their time at Kadina High and the wonderful teachers who have obviously had such an impact on their lives to date....

International Cricketers visit

On November 21^st, Kadina High School's 14 years Boys cricket team were treated to a visit from the Japanese and Indonesian international Cricket teams. It was fantastic to see the students take to the nets for some practice, and get some spin bowling advice. For the students they said the best thing was to be able to be a small part of the ICC World T20 qualifier advertisement for social media currently in production. See the clip at CLIP
